Child and Teen Counselling FAQs
A Parent’s Guide to Child and Teen Counselling FAQs
Find clear answers about how online counselling works, confidentiality, parent involvement, suitability, fees and what children and teenagers can expect from sessions.
1. What can child and teen counselling help with?
Counselling can support children and young people experiencing anxiety, low confidence, friendship difficulties, bullying, school-related stress, family changes, bereavement, anger, emotional difficulties and other challenges. A child doesn't need to have a diagnosis to benefit from counselling.
2. How does online counselling work with children?
Online counselling can be much more creative than simply talking on a video call. Depending on your child's age and needs, sessions can include games, drawing, storytelling, creative activities and our virtual playroom, helping children express themselves in ways that feel natural to them.
3. What happens in teen counselling?
Teenagers are given a confidential, non-judgemental space to talk about whatever is important to them. Sessions are led by the young person's needs and may explore emotions, relationships, confidence, school, family life or anything else they are finding difficult.
4. How much does counselling cost?
Individual therapy sessions start at £95 per 50-minute session.
5. Will I be involved in my child's counselling?
Parents and carers are an important part of supporting a child. The level of involvement will depend on your child's age, circumstances and individual needs. We will discuss how this will work before counselling begins.
6. Is what my child says confidential?
Yes. Children and teenagers need to feel that counselling is a private space where they can speak openly. Confidentiality will be explained clearly at the beginning of therapy, including the circumstances in which information may need to be shared because of safeguarding or serious concerns about someone's safety.
7. What is family therapy and support?
Family sessions provide an opportunity to explore difficulties together, improve communication and better understand one another's experiences. The focus may be on parent-child relationships, conflict, emotional regulation, family changes or finding healthier ways of communicating and relating to one another.
8. Does my child need a diagnosis to see you?
No. Many children and teenagers come to counselling without a diagnosis. Sometimes there is a specific difficulty, while at other times parents simply notice that their child seems unhappy, anxious, withdrawn, overwhelmed or not quite themselves.
9. Do you work with ADHD and emotional regulation difficulties?
Yes. Alongside general child and adolescent counselling, I have specialist experience in ADHD, behaviour and emotional dysregulation. Sessions are adapted to the individual child or young person rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
10. Is online counselling suitable for every child?
No. Online counselling can be highly effective for many children and teenagers, but it is not suitable for every young person or every situation. Before counselling begins, we consider your child’s age, needs and presenting concerns to decide whether online support is appropriate.
Where it is suitable, sessions are adapted to the individual young person and may include conversation, creative activities, games and our virtual playroom. If another type of support would be more appropriate, we will discuss this openly with parents or carers.
11. What does my child need for an online session?
Your child will need a suitable device with a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private space where they won't be overheard or interrupted. Younger children may also use simple creative materials or toys during sessions when appropriate.
12. How do we get started?
The first step is to get in touch and tell us a little about what has been happening. We can discuss your concerns, your child or teenager’s needs and whether counselling or parent and family support may be suitable. We’ll also explain how the service works, answer any questions and agree the most appropriate next step.
