About Child & Teen Counselling

Counsellor speaking with a young person

Child & Teen Counselling provides specialist therapeutic support for children and teenagers navigating emotional, social and mental health challenges. Our practice is built on empathy, professional expertise and a deep understanding of the different developmental needs of children and adolescents.

We support young people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, low self-esteem, school-related stress, friendship and relationship difficulties, family changes and times when emotions simply feel difficult to understand or manage.

We offer a safe, confidential and supportive space where children and teenagers can explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace. We recognise that young people do not always find it easy to express themselves through words alone, so our counsellors may use creative, interactive and age-appropriate approaches alongside talking therapy. Sessions are adapted to the individual young person, their personality, developmental stage and what helps them feel most comfortable engaging in therapy.

Our aim is not simply to focus on the difficulty that brought a young person to counselling. We also help children and teenagers develop greater self-understanding, emotional awareness, confidence and healthier ways of coping with the challenges they face.

We work collaboratively with parents and carers where appropriate, while also respecting the young person's need for privacy and a therapeutic space of their own. Before counselling begins, we take time to understand the concerns, consider whether online counselling is suitable and explain clearly how the process, confidentiality and safeguarding arrangements work.

Professional Standards

Working therapeutically with children and teenagers requires a different approach from adult counselling. Our counsellors are selected for their professional training, experience and ability to work sensitively and effectively with younger clients.

We recognise that children and teenagers do not always express themselves through words alone. Sessions may therefore incorporate creative, age-appropriate and interactive approaches alongside talking therapy, depending on the young person's age, preferences and individual needs.

Our therapeutic work may draw upon a range of recognised approaches, including integrative counselling, person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural approaches, creative therapeutic techniques and other evidence-informed methods appropriate to the individual young person.

Safeguarding

The safety and wellbeing of every young person using our service is central to our work.

We follow clear safeguarding procedures and take appropriate action if concerns arise regarding the safety or welfare of a child or young person.

Parents and carers are provided with information about safeguarding and the limits of confidentiality before counselling begins, so that these responsibilities are understood from the outset.

Confidentiality & Information Governance

Counselling is confidential, and we recognise that privacy is particularly important when supporting children and teenagers.

We explain clearly how confidentiality works, what information may be shared with parents or carers, and the circumstances in which confidentiality may need to be broken because of safeguarding or other serious concerns.

Personal and clinical information is handled carefully and in accordance with applicable data protection, privacy and professional requirements.

Before Counselling Begins

Before therapy begins, we consider the young person's needs, presenting concerns, age, circumstances and suitability for online counselling. Parents or carers are given the opportunity to discuss their concerns, ask questions and understand how the service works before sessions commence.

Where counselling is considered appropriate, we will explain the practical arrangements, confidentiality, safeguarding, parental involvement and what the young person can expect from therapy.

If we believe that another type of service or level of support would be more appropriate, we will discuss this openly.

A Flexible & Individual Approach

No two children or teenagers are the same.

Our approach is therefore flexible, creative and responsive to the individual young person. We aim to provide a therapeutic environment in which children and teenagers can feel comfortable exploring their experiences, developing greater understanding of themselves and finding healthier ways to manage the challenges they are facing.

Our Ethos

Supporting children, teens & parents to feel understood, supported and able to move forward.
